Thom Jones has lived in over a dozen countries and has provided trainings all over the world! Its difficult to say how Thomas got to where he is today because as a student he was very unsuccessful and was often met with failing grades. He even started his professional life as a waiter before going into teaching, then administration before finally ending up as the independent freelancer he is today.
Some of his accomplishments are having worked as the senior executive at Embassy CES, as well as the Director of Operations for Study Group USA followed by his return to the UK to work with Trinity College, London.
Presently, he works with a variety of organisations on a wide range of projects. He is principal of Oxford College International summer programme for SBC while simultaneously running his own company: Brock Solutions Agency. He presents regularly around the world on a range of topics and is a guest lecturer at four different universities.
Ten years ago he cycled from the UK to Turkey, travelling through 11 countries for a charity fundraiser. He arrived at IATEFL 2015 in Manchester having cycled from Frankfurt in only five days, accompanied by round the world cyclist Julian Sayarer, who of course got there first!
He is rubbish at maths but his mother thinks he is great at everything! Späť

Prezentácia: PLENARY - Flexible Freedom: The bendy truth about teaching
Náhľad prezentácie

Názov: PLENARY - Flexible Freedom: The bendy truth about teaching

Abstrakt:

We will look at the truth of intercultural communication and the real reasons students study and teachers teach. We'll sort through some of the perceived wisdom on methods, skills and how we can divest them of cultural agendas while trying to promote elements of inclusion. We'll shake the native teacher fallacy and see what elements of gender, age, race and cultural bias fall out of the bottom of the packet. Two things we often hear in class are: "PUT THAT PHONE AWAY!" and "SPEAK ENGLISH!" Both typify some grave concerns in the EFL classroom underlying a serious disconnect between the teacher and the art of teaching. We will use the display of a variety of creative exercises for all levels and ages to explore the themes of technology, resources, 21st century skills, ingrained responses, relevance and motivation.

Abstrakt:

We can teach, but they have to learn. Many students feel that turning up is enough. How many times have we all heard someone say "I loved (insert subject) at school, but I had a terrible teacher so I learnt nothing"? We are not Harry Potter and none of us are carrying a magic wand?so we have to create an environment where students will want to engage. We need to maintain our own levels of energy and motivation as much as theirs, and so do they. We are all responsible for this and share the burden. We'll look at techniques to set up an environment conducive to all of the above, and activities, ideas and strategies to keep the energy going for all. Enough buzzwards, methodology and abstract discussion-this is concrete foundations to build a class on. In anything, at any age or level. Every participant has to promise to use at least one of the ideas we'll look at in their next class. I will if you will! Suitable for teachers of any language or, indeed, subject. It will be interactive, there will be workshop elements and learning and doing...there will be NO communal singing nor will anyone be forced to do star jumps. There will be shouting, throwing things and probably some sweeties involved somewhere.
Main points to be covered: - Flexible, organic classrooms - Classroom control - Swiss Army knife lessons-ensuring you have back up plans up your sleeve - Ways to use your phone as a valid educational tool - A selection of communicative teaching exercises that will work at all levels - Motivating them all-students and staff

Abstrakt:

We'll be taking a whistlestop tour through managing schools, materials, teachers, students, parents and.......expectations. Traditional management styles, uses of resources, staff management, student inclusion, parental support. Dreams and the realities as well as where we can use unifying ideology and transparent access to information in order to help, and build solid foundations for our schools growth and success. Leadership styles and how we can use them, when and with whom? This is a session looking at management of successful programmes and how to get the best out of staff, students and your surroundings. Most importantly how to come through with your sanity, homelife and business all on track. We'll talk about ways to engage everyone involved and roll with the punches. We'll look at coping mechanisms and why we make the same mistakes again and again and we'll look at motivation of all involved. It will be a talk and a workshop and we'll be asking a clever room for clever ideas to share. Bring your own clever.
Main points to be covered:
- Leadership - Who are we dealing with? - Goals - Flexible outcomes - Motivation - HR with love - Expectations

Prezentácia: PLENARY - CPD. Is it for everyone?
Náhľad prezentácie

Názov: PLENARY - CPD. Is it for everyone?

Abstrakt:

In a perfect world, all teachers would have access to CPD [write out what CPD is], all teachers would have time for CPD, all teachers would have financial support for CPD. However, the reality is far from this ideal. CPD becomes one of the first things to be cut when an organisation is going through difficult times, and in some parts of the world it's not even considered as something important and so it doesn't happen at all. What can teachers do to continue to develop when times are hard? How can teachers develop where there is no development plan or resources? Why have a continuous professional development plan? Does everyone want it? Is it necessary? How do we persuade school directors to see that investing in teachers will actually benefit the school in the long run? In this talk I would like to look at the ways we can help teachers with CPD in difficult scenarios and try to answer these questions.

Prezentácia: WORKSHOP - NNESTs or NESTs?
Náhľad prezentácie

Názov: WORKSHOP - NNESTs or NESTs?

Abstrakt:

Teaching English as a foreign or second language was always seen as best done by native English speakers, and still is in a lot of contexts by School Directors, HR departments, students and parents. In this session we will be discussing why, when most of the world's English teachers are non-native and it is not necessary to have a native level command of English, does recruitment still discriminate against NNESTs in favour of NESTs and how we can change this. We will attempt to define what the qualities of a "good" teacher are and if NESTs always are the best and only choice. We will also be looking at our hiring policies, from the initial advertisement placed in newspapers and on websites to short-listing, interviewing and hiring and discuss why safe recruitment is preferred over fair recruitment.
